Vamps Chop Concrete Floor to Douse Fire

Oakdale -  A smoldering fire in a wooden beam under the mess hall of La Salle Military Academy forced fireman to cut through a foot of reinforced concrete yesterday morning to extinguish it.

Smoke from the beam, set afire by an overheated duct from the main heating plant of the military academy, was first noticed immediately after the morning meal of the cadet corps and an alarm was turned in at 7 AM to the West Sayville Fire Department.

Because of the maze of pipes

and walls in the cellar under the mess hall, firemen could not fight the fire from below and were forced to cut a long hole in the concrete floor to find the smoldering beam.  Smoke filled the hall and flowed through ducts into the administration building which was once the Commodore Bourne estate.

The damage was confined to the floor and one wall.  Firemen also were forced to cut a hold in the floor of an office to complete their work.  At 11 AM yesterday they had the difficult fire out.
